Cultural Journeys (select locations)

IHOBF's Cultural Journeys Program provides teachers and students with drum-based music-making experiences, educational resources and learning activities that draw on diverse cultures from around the world.

Cultural Journeys Program Components:

Educational Resources including the Roots of Rhythm Teacher's Guide featuring multi-cultural, cross-curricular lessons designed to support teachers in integrating program content into classrooms. The guide is made available online at the IHOBF website Learning Center.

Teacher Workshops that involve teachers and educators in interactive learning experiences and provide them with knowledge and resources for introducing program content and related learning activities into classrooms and other educational settings.

Extended Learning Activities for students that include artist visits to classrooms and related resources.

Student Assembly Program designed to take students on a global adventure to learn about different cultures and their rhythms and songs, and to see and hear unique drums and percussion instruments from around the world.  Content in the program aligns with and is supported by the Roots of Rhythm Teacher’s Guide. The student assembly program demonstrates how:

  • Songs, rhythms and drums from different places and times can reflect the society, traditions and life experiences of the people who created them
  • Songs and rhythms may differ from one culture to the next reflecting diverse traditions and circumstances
  • Songs and rhythms may be similar across cultures as they relate to things that people everywhere have in common: community celebrations, social gatherings, connections to nature, conflicts and religion
  • Rhythms and drums from different places/cultures made their way to the United States and influenced the music of this country, including much of the music played today in the United States.
