Teacher Workshops

Since its inception in 2000, IHOBF-Orlando has enjoyed much success. More than 25,000 students in the greater Orlando community have participated in IHOBF programs. The response to IHOBF-Orlando programs from local students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. The IHOBF-Orlando BSH program was highlighted at the Florida Alliance of Arts Education’s Annual Conference in 2002.

IHOBF-Orlando has been well received by the City of Orlando and the University of Central Florida and has earned the support and endorsement of the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. In addition, IHOBF-Orlando has partnered with various local organizations to bring IHOBF arts and educational programming to community locations including the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities, Orange County Regional History Center and the Wells’Built Museum of African American History.

In Fall 2003, IHOBF-Orlando introduced teacher workshops in connection with the Blues SchoolHouse program.

IHOBF-Orlando recently presented a Folk Art workshop for The Florida Arts Education Conference. Thirty-two art teachers attended the workshop, which included a lecture and slide presentation by University of Central Florida Professor Kristin Congdon. As part of the program, IHOBF-Orlando presented a hands-on Memory Bottle activity taken from the Folk Art Section of the IHOBF Blues SchoolHouse Classroom Guide.

IHOBF-Orlando participated in "Where The Art Meets the Soul," the House of Blues 5th Annual Folk Art Festival, by providing hands-on children’s workshops at the Inspiration Station for 300 students. Activities included making three-dimensional self-portraits with artist Missionary Mary Proctor, creating Earth Friendly Shakers with artist Mr. Imagination, exploring Florida Landscape Painting with artist James Gibson, making Peace Mandalas with artist Angela Studer and sand painting with IHOBF volunteers and staff.

In commemoration of the 2003 "Year of the Blues" resolution passed by Congress, IHOBF-Orlando presented a Special Edition "Year of The Blues" Blues SchoolHouse to students from Lake Eola Charter School. As part of the program, artist Amanda Vickers worked with students to create an 8-foot guitar that honored the men and women of the blues.
