Drawing Us Together
Drawing Us Together 2012, a visual arts exhibit and competition, invites 6th through 12th grade students to create original artworks inspired by the 2012 theme: The Arts Inspire Hope. In creating their artworks, students are encouraged to consider how the arts can inspire hope in challenging times and difficult circumstances. Exhibits will take place at House of Blues New Orleans in May and online at actionforthearts.org. Click here for more information.
Action for the Arts Instruments, Arts Resources, and Grants Program
Public schools and non-profit organizations located in Orleans Parish may be eligible to apply for musical instruments, arts resources and grants to support music and arts instructional programs for youth. Applications for the 2012/2013 program year (September 1, 2012, through June 30, 2013) will be accepted from May 1 through July 13, 2012. Click here for more information.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2012 Spirit of the Dream Celebration Poetry, Rap and Essay Event
This annual program for middle and high school students paid tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Wednesday, January 11, at House of Blues New Orleans. Click here to see highlights from the celebration.
Drum and Guitar Initiative Sites
New Orleans school and community-based drum and guitar programs that were supported by IHOBF’s Action for the Arts during the 2011/2012 school year are eligible to partcipate in a Spring 2012 student recital at the House of Blues. Please email ihobfneworleans@livenation.com for details.
Visual Arts Workshops
This two-hour workshop at the House of Blues includes a guided art tour of the House of Blues’ folk art collection and a hands-on art activity inspired by the work of an artist featured in the tour. Workshops are primarily offered to 5th through 12th grade students on select weekday mornings from 10am to 12pm. This programming is offered free of charge to Orleans public school students and at a fee ($5 per person) for all others. Please email ihobfneworleans@livenation.com for details.
Blues SchoolHouse
Blues SchoolHouse resources including the Blues SchoolHouse Classroom Guide are available free of charge at IHOBF’s online Learning Center.
Bringin' Down the House
This musical competition for high school students took place December 7, 2011, at House of Blues New Orleans. Congratulations to The Midterm, winner of the 2011 Bringin’ Down the House musical competition! They received a $500 Guitar Center gift card, studio time at Piety Street Studios, an Xbox 360/Kinect, and a $250 donation from IHOBF to his high school’s music department. Congratulations to second place and $300 Guitar Center gift card and Xbox 360/Kinect winner KiDD Gizzard and third place and $200 Guitar Center gift card winner FAAM, who also received a $200 House of Blues gift certificate and special recognition for generating the most community support for the competition. Cultural Journeys
Cultural Journeys takes teachers and students on a journey to explore different cultures, music and instruments from around the world and enjoy both listening to and playing rhythms. This programming provides teachers, educators, and students with drum-based educational resources, music-making experiences and other learning activities. Program components include:
- Cultural Journeys Student Programming - Offered primarily to 5th through 12th graders at the House of Blues and in school/community settings, Cultural Journeys programs are approximately one hour in length and include:
Exploring Mardi Gras Indian Traditions - An interactive student assembly program that explores aspects of the history, traditions and artistry of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian culture.
Exploring New Orleans Drumming Traditions - An artist visit to classroom during which students explore drumming traditions of New Orleans, learn to play various rhythms and participate in a drum circle.
The Rhythm Is Going To Move You! - An interactive student assembly program that explores drum and dance rhythms from around the world.
Exploring Percussive Rhythms of Tap Dance - An artist visit to classroom during which students explore the history of tap dance and learn percussive tap rhythms. This program will also be available in a student assembly format in the spring.

- Cultural Journeys Educational Resources - Resources including a teacher’s guide and recordings of traditional rhythms from around the world are distributed at teacher workshops and available at IHOBF's Learning Center.
Student Visual Arts Exhibit (Fanfare)
For the 11th consecutive year, IHOBF is partnered with Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre to facilitate an art competition for area youth. Using “found” or recycled materials to create their artwork, 5th through 12th grade students depicted significant events that have shaped their lives and world.
